The NCCD has published resources to strengthen teacher and school leader understanding of how the Standards apply in schools.

Educators can now access a suite of resources on the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) Portal to support them to implement the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (Standards) in their schools.

The Standards clarify the obligations of education providers under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA). They tell education providers what they have to do to assist students with disability.

The Standards cover:

  • Enrolment

  • Participation

  • Curriculum development, accreditation and delivery

  • Student support services

  • Harassment and victimisation.

These resources help teachers and school leaders to develop their understanding of the Standards and their obligations under them and the DDA. Educators can also learn about common experiences, challenges and considerations in implementing the Standards across primary and secondary levels.

Animation video

Watch an animation video for a holistic overview of the Standards. This video serves as an excellent introductory resource for educators, parents and caregivers.

It helps teachers and school leaders to understand what the Standards are, how they apply in schools and how they support school students with disability.

Case studies

Access case studies to learn how schools can make reasonable adjustments to ensure students with disability can participate in education on the same basis as their peers.

The case studies address common experiences, challenges and considerations for educators in implementing the Standards. They also showcase a diversity of experiences, including First Nations students, culturally and linguistically diverse students, and students who live in remote and rural areas.

How to view resources on the Disability Standards for Education 2005

You can access the suite of resources on the NCCD Portal

These resources were developed by Education Services Australia in consultation with key stakeholders including the Australian Government Department of Education’s Disability Standards Implementation Reference Group and the NCCD Project Management Group.

Practitioner expertise came from Dr Shiralee Poed, Associate Professor, School of Education, University of Queensland; and Mr John Gardiner, consulting clinical psychologist and teacher. The resources were also reviewed and endorsed by select staff at the Queensland University of Technology Centre for Inclusive Education.
